EVENT
1: 2004 Manly Longboard Expo
History:
The surfing year 1964 was the year when Da Bull and Mike Stange
opened up Outside Pipeline, and Bruce Brown gave us his masterpiece
The Endless Summer. 1964 was dominated by the first world title
surfing contest held at Manly Beach, Australia -- attended by the
largest numbers of spectators the sport has ever seen. Significant
also was the rise of Australia's first international champion surfer
Midget Farrelly and Hawaii's Joey Cabell.
Object: To stage an event at Manly that celebrates the first
world titles by staging an expression session that features all
the participants in the finals of that first world title surfing
contest. This event would bring together both male and female finalists
for a commemorative dinner and an exhibition of surfing. There would
also be a photographic exhibition featuring images from this first
world title surfing contest. And a leg of the ASP World Longboard

History
of The Longboard
|
| The
longboard is the traditional board used for surfing. It is called
a longboard because of its length, width and thickness. These
boards are very stable allowing for almost unlimited movement
by the surfer over the board. This allows for very colorful
and entertaining surfing. Most maneuvers are slower and more
drawn out on the longboard than in today's short board, cut
and slash style of riding. Certain maneuvers such as the famous
"Hang Ten' and 'cheater five' were initiated in the longboard
era by riders to impress not only those of the female gender,
but to their peers both on the water and on the beach. In the
last five years, sales of longboards have dramatically increased
as a percentage of total surfboard sales both in Australia and
worldwide as a mixture of younger as well as more mature surfers
hit the surf together. |
