ANDREW Johns says he'll play the next rugby league season as if it's his last - because it could well be.
Johns is under contract with Newcastle until the end of the 2008 season and, after meeting with new coach Brian Smith, is looking forward to 2007 with enthusiasm - and without the captaincy.
But at age 32 and after 14 years in first grade, the former Australia captain says the decision on his future he makes midway through next year could see him retire.
"It (2007) could well be my last. I'm just going to make sure I really enjoy it," said Johns at a Knights' membership drive at EnergyAustralia Stadium yesterday.
Johns, who will have minor surgery on his right elbow next week, has endured a horrific injury toll since 2001.
He suffered season-ending injuries in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and has struggled through the past two seasons with various ailments.
Johns said the decision on whether he retires will depend on how his body stands up to another season of heavy contact.
"It's all going to come down to how the body feels and whether I can still get myself up to get bashed around each week."
The champion halfback revealed he would not resume the Newcastle captaincy he relinquished late last season.
"I'd like to be able to turn up with my boots and just worry about playing the best I can instead of worrying about the team," Johns said. |
